(Please note this is unedited)
The Proposal
Milo and Hayley
Never in a million years did I ever imagine myself staring down at a man on one knee holding a ring toward me.
But here I was.
I loved Milo, I really did. But my best friend wasn’t here. she was over in the middle east, waiting by her lover’s bedside while he fought for his life.
Lakey’s boyfriend was an army Captain and he almost died trying to save her. Talk about romantic.
Me? my boyfriend was a teacher, well, substitute teacher, and our reputations had barely recovered after we were forced to divulge our secret affair.
And now, here we were, standing in the place where it all began. In the place where we first met. I should have been happy, right?
I wasn’t. I don’t know why I wasn’t.
But standing in the middle of the administration building at our college. Yeah, I just wasn’t feeling it.
“Milo? What are you doing?” I asked him, glancing around hoping no one was watching.
They were. In fact, almost the entire faculty was watching us.
I wanted to die.
My cheeks heated.
“Hayley, the day I met you, here, in the foyer of the admin building, you literally fell head over heels for me.”
I laughed. “literally.”
“I know we’ve been through a lot, and have had to endure more than most couples. But our love never died. In fact, I think it has become stronger.”
It had been a few months since the incident I’d rather forget, where Milo’s ex, or who would have loved to call herself his ex, Rebekah, threatened to blackmail us to get what she wanted. But with the help of my dad and his old contacts in the Australian Federal Police, Rebekah was arrested before anything dreadful happened. Well, she still managed to go down on Milo in front of me. That was the trigger for my horrible nightmares.
I had been in therapy for months now, and with the help of my parents and Milo, I was getting better.
So, this. right here, this moment, I had no idea was even coming.
“Hayley, I love you more than anything. Would you do me the honour of marrying me?”
That’s when he brought out the ring – a huge vintage style blue sapphire and diamond rock.
“Oh my god.” My hand flew to my mouth.
I was speechless.
“We can do this on your terms. We don’t have to get married right away. I know you want Lakey with you. So, we can wait until she’s back.”
“Yes. I wanna wait until Lakey is back and Bryce is okay.”
Milo froze. “Wait, was that a yes?”
I giggled. “Yes. That was a yes. Now, get up before we become the talk of the entire campus again.”
He got to his feet, slipped the ring on my ring finger and held me close.
“I think it’s already too late for that,” he whispered into my ear.
I smiled and kissed him, wrapping my arms around his neck.
Now I knew for certain I loved Milo.
I wanted him in my life. I wanted nothing more than to
be his wife.
I couldn’t wait to tell Lakey.
